THE DUMB CITY

The name of the exhibition The Dumb City is based on a play of words in Russian. Written together the "" means silent, dumb, while written separately is translated as "not mine, alien". These variants are indiscernible on hearing.

The semantic origin of the name is based on long and unsuccessful attempts of the author to determine the melody inherent to selected pictures. Having decided, that the arising melody will depend all the same on the spectator, the author has left these pictures silent.

The exhibition was on display in November, 2003 in the Volgograd museum of the fine arts.

A CITY MELODY
(THE DUMB CITY  2)

Epigraph
The sense and concept of holidays (festivals) has been so confusing,

that our well-known Russian historians, chronographs and ethnographers

had hard times to determine their character.
M.Zabylin. Russian people. Customs, ceremonies,
legends, superstitions and poetry. Moscow. 1880.

DEMOVERSION

All pictures of this project are taken during holidays, meetings, demonstrations, festivals, other public actions.
None of the fixed episodes was staged or corrected by the photographer.

The word meaning in Russian the demonstration version of the computer program is used as the name of the project. The same word can be read as a compound of the words designating people (demos) and a variant of some events report (version). The fact, that many of the shots were taken during mass demonstrations and public events also contributed to the choice of the title. The main characteristic of a computer software and games in their demonstration variants - a limited possibility of active participation for the user - also mattered.

The exhibition was on display in October-November, 2004 in the Volgograd museum of the fine arts.
